When a municipal council is open and honest about how it makes decisions, it helps build trust with the people it serves. Transparency means clearly sharing information—such as how tax money is spent, why certain projects are approved, and what future plans are being considered. This kind of openness allows residents to stay informed, feel connected, and take part in shaping the community.
When people understand what their local government is doing, they are more likely to participate in public meetings, events, and decision-making. For example, if a council explains the reason for a new road project or a change in the way services are being delivered, residents can see how it affects them and have the chance to provide input. Transparency helps people feel that their opinions matter and can lead to better solutions that reflect the needs of the community (Institute for Local Government, 2015).
A transparent council also encourages people to vote and stay active during elections. When residents know what their elected officials have done, they can make informed choices at the polls. This increases voter confidence and turnout, leading to a more representative and effective local government. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD, 2016), transparency improves civic engagement and strengthens democracy by making citizens feel more included in political life.
Transparency also builds trust and reduces the spread of false information. When councils share meeting minutes, budgets, and updates online or in public forums, they show they have nothing to hide. This honesty can prevent rumors, reduce public frustration, and encourage support for new policies or initiatives. Trust in government is key to successful community programs and long-term planning.
Finally, transparent councils set an example for ethical behavior and responsible leadership. They show that government can work fairly and openly, which inspires greater participation and cooperation from residents. Communities that trust their local leaders are more likely to work together to improve safety, protect the environment, and support economic development.
Transparency in a municipal council is not just a good practice—it’s essential. It helps create a stronger, more involved community where residents trust their leaders, participate in elections, and work together to solve problems. By being open and honest, councils can build a better future for everyone.
In conclusion, I want it to be clear that I am not being critical of this council or past councils. In some respect, our city does like many others do. However, as I have written about this in the past (Contact – April 2022 and in November 2023 here (For more transparency)), I still believe we could do better and that there would be benefits.
